Thoughts on: Night

Sadly, this is not a fiction book. It is more of a memoir kind of book. Eliezer Wiesel tells the story of how he lived through the concentration camps in WWII. It is a really captivating story, a really sad and horror story. I quite enjoyed the writing style of the author, it was smooth and to the point. I gave this book 3.5 out of 5 stars on Goodreads.

Lo que pienso de: Nosotros

Éste es el libro distópico más antiguo que he leído. Fue escrito unos cuantos años después de la formación de la URSS, y en cierta medida refleja esa decepción de ver cómo la revolución se había convertido en un proyecto de nación represivo y riguroso.

"Nosotros" habla sobre un futuro en el que el Estado Único regula a todos bajo un sistema basado en el razonamiento, la lógica y las matemáticas. Nadie ya tiene nombre, todos son asignados un número, el del protagonista es D-503, y es el constructor del Integral, una nave que tiene como objetivo explorar y quizá colonizar otros planetas. En este mundo no existe un "yo individual", hay una pérdida de la individualidad, de la privacidad y de la imaginación. La fantasía es considerada una enfermedad.

D comienza a escribir una especie de diario para lanzarlo junto con El Integral, y por eso el libro está escrito en forma de anotaciones. Conforme va transcurriendo la novela, vemos como D comienza a cambiar progresivamente.

SPOILERS:

En las distopías siempre parece ser que hay alguien que afecta al personaje principal en su forma de pensar. Y, curiosamente, siempre es una mujer, como en 1984 es Julia, en Fahrenheit 451 es la niñita, en Nosotros es I-330.

Algo que creo que me llamó la atención fue que D piensa que hay "dos" como él que habitan su cuerpo; y que el verdadero es el cotidiano, cuando el oro, es el auténtico; es el que está despertando.

Finalmente, me sorprendió la similitud que tiene este libro con 1984. Sin duda, Orwell tomó muchos elementos para su novela de este libro. En especial el final, es similarmente aterrador.

Thoughts on: The Legend of Sleepy Hollow

I know this is kind of a classic. However, even when it is so short, it took me a while to read it because I was tremendously bored by it. I did not get the whole story, I even had to start re reading it because I spend days without opening it. I did not get why is it considered to be spooky. Honestly I did not really cared about the story that much.

I gave it 2 out of 5 stars on Goodreads.

Thoughts on: Destroy Me

This a Shatter Me novella. It is from Warner's POV. And we kind of learn more about his character and how he really is. He turns out to be a maniac for control (maybe OCD). Also, we kind of see a glimpse of his dad, the supreme commander of The Reestablishment. 

I gave this 3 out of 5 stars on Goodreads. 

SPOILERY COMMENTS: 

Turns out Warner has a reason to everything he does. For example the excuse of "using Juliette as a weapon" was just to have access to her. I mean, somehow, it is trying to prove that he too is not that bad. 

It was until chapter 8 (maybe) when I started to felt sympathy towards him, when he started to read her diary. 

What really caught my attention was that he apparently bumped on Juliette's case by looking for something else.What was he looking for? And it is related to people with superpowers?

Thoughts on: Shatter Me

This is a dystopian book that centers in Juliette, a girl that has a lethal touch and because of that, she's been locked in a kind of asylum for over 200 days. However, one day a guy enters her cell and everything changes. The government is called The Reestablishment and the section where she is is led by a young man named Warner. The world is so different, everything related to nature has vanished. 

This is a book with a really slow beginning, but somehow manages to pick up very good at the last half of it. The last 150 pages are probably the best of the novel. In general, I think I was expecting to like this book so much more than I actually did, I even thought it was really a hyped up book. 

I gave this book 3.5 out of 5 stars on Goodreads. It is not bad, I liked it, but it certainly was not really amazing. 

SPOILERY COMMENTS: 

This is a story that was kind of predictable at times. For example, I sort of guessed that maybe Warner wants everyone to be afraid of her because he does not want anyone to touch/hurt her. 

I am not so sure I like Juliette so much, I mean, I know she's been through a lot but I just do not sympathize with the idea of people who do not want to fight, who jut give up. I know her character is in constant change and she starts to develop by the end of the book, however at first I did not like that about her. Nonetheless, I really liked the character development of hers. How she was so scared and confused at first and then self-confident later. Also, that is quite noticeable in the way the book is written, the way the text is (at first there were so many crossed words and then almost none).

Lo que pienso de: Leche

Leche es una colección de cuentos de Marina Perezagua. Lo que pasa con los libros de cuentos es que no se puede dar una reseña, pero en este particular caso tengo que decir que este pequeño libro dejó una gran impresión en mí.

Leche es una colección de cuentos de Marina Perezagua. Lo que pasa con los libros de cuentos es que no se puede dar una reseña, pero en este particular caso tengo que decir que este pequeño libro dejó una gran impresión en mí. Al comenzar a leerlo no tenía muchas expectativas, pero vaya que me sorprendió de una manera positiva. 

La forma en que cada cuento está escrito me parece muy inteligente, con historias bien formadas y excelentemente narradas con elementos que se encuentran y se unen de una manera brillante. Las metáforas son precisas y certeras y su prosa me parece impecable y maravillosa. 

Algunos de los temas concurrentes de los cuentos son la sexualidad, la extinción humana, la soledad, el engaño a uno mismo, e incluso la muerte. Pero también pude distinguir el cerrar ciclos, y el de volver al origen, ya que estuvieron presentes en las historias. 

     

*Posibles SPOILERS*:

• El primer cuento "Little Boy" me parece muy inteligente. Una historia bien formada y bien narrada, con elementos que se encuentran y se unen brillantemente. Los elementos como las ballenas y sus voces, o como la bomba con el nombre del grupo y lo que eso implicaba se me hizo genial (en el estricto sentido de la palabra, es decir, de genios). Este cuento narra la vida de una mujer víctima y sobreviviente de Hiroshima, y cómo se quedó con una amputación -en más de una forma- debido a la bomba. Es un relato doloroso en todos los sentidos. 
• "Alga" es una historia igualmente con metáforas marinas. No estoy segura de entender los finales, pero me están gustando las historias. 
• "Él" fue un cuento maravilloso. 
• El cuento que le da título al libro es quizá el más difícil de asimilar por los temas que trata. Resulta cruel, y quizá un poco traumante, pero revela también la naturaleza mórbida del ser humano y de las épocas de guerra. 

A este libro le di de 4.5 estrellas de 5 en Goodreads. 

Lo que pienso de: Amantes de sangre

Amantes de sangre es el segundo libro en la trilogía del Príncipe Maldito, de Ramón Obón. Por lo que no recomiendo que lean esta reseña si no han leído el primer libro.

Bueno, este libro para empezar es aproximadamente 100 páginas más que el primero, sin embargo tiene demasiada "paja", muchas cosas que no son necesarias o que no llevan a ningún lado. Eso es un factor que hizo que el libro fuera tedioso. No obstante, no fue el único motivo por el que este libro me disgustó sobremanera.

Opinión personal, *SPOILERS*:

• Al final del primer libro, RR y Catherine "destruyeron" a Maurice y a Sophía, sin embargo, el segundo libro tira eso por la borda ya que resulta que ninguno en realidad murió. Lo que era predecible, considerando que es una trilogía. 
• Una de las cosas que son irrelevantes para la historia (y digo irrelevante no porque no sea parte del personaje, sino porque no condujo a nada específico dentro de la trama) es cómo la familia de RR se murió en un accidente. Otra de las historias es la de Mustafá con Catherine, es decir, me parece fuera de lugar. 
• Otra razón que hizo que detestara este libro es el diálogo. El diálogo de verdad es lamentable. Intenta ser interesante y grandilocuente, pero no lo logra. Además de que falla en darle el tono de realidad a su historia, ya que nadie habla así, no es creíble para nada. Pero algo que sí debo aceptar es que creí notar una leve mejora en cuanto a su escritura. Lo malo es que lo cambió por calidad en cuanto a la trama del texto. 
• La profesión del autor (es abogado) es claramente un tema por sí mismo en la obra y en la vida de los personajes. 
• De nuevo, regreso a la paja, ya había leído 128 páginas (tomé la precaución de ver en qué página estaba) y en realidad la historia no se había movido, no había ocurrido nada y lo que había en esas páginas no aportaba nada de validez a la historia. 
• La escena con la viejita curandera me molesta muchísimo. No tiene sentido ni objeto de ser, además se supone que RR es pragmático y que no cree en todo eso. Aunque supongo que el sentido era precisamente demostrar que RR estaba "abriéndose" más a ese tipo de cosas. Sin embargo fue totalmente innecesario. 
• Algo también que fue molesto fue que de la nada, Catherine se volvió "la mujer amada". Y casualmente, Nora se quita del camino al regresar con su ex esposo. Ridículo, y resultó muy conveniente para RR. 
• Ese es precisamente otro punto en contra de la novela. Todo es muy conveniente siempre, y nada ya es creíble. 
• Literalmente los vampiros no hicieron pelea alguna, se han estado construyendo y hablando de su poderío por 600 páginas (entre los dos libros), para que al final matarlos fuera estúpidamente fácil en tan sólo 4 páginas. 

A este libro le di 2 de 5 estrellas en Goodreads. Voy a continuar con esta trilogía nada más porque ya tengo el tercer libro, pero los dos primeros me han decepcionado sobremanera.

Lo que pienso de: Viva la república

Viva la república es una novela checa escrita por Jan Procházka, situada durante la guerra. El protagonista es un niño llamado Olda, que se ve obligado a crecer más rápidamente por su contexto histórico. Olda sabe de aviones de guerra y los identifica con facilidad. Le gustan los animales, en especial los perros y tiene una relación de odio con un grupo de muchachos bravucones. Sin embargo, al llegar los alemanes al pueblo, comienzan a cambiar más rápido las cosas.

Opinión personal (posibles SPOILERS):

*Algunas medidas que toma su padre al llegar los alemanes es poner "Tifus" en un letrero en su casa, para evitar que se acerquen.

*Al peligro de los alemanes se suma el de los rusos. La gente saquea todo, comienzan a perder su sentido de humanidad y "los principios" por lo que se regían.

*La historia de repente se vuelve desgarradora, en un par de ocasiones me hizo un nudo en la garganta. Y eso es mucho decir en una novela tan corta como ésta.

*Los chicos deben llevar los caballos a esconder durante la guerra. Sin embargo, Olda se ve enfrentado a un montón de cosas que para su edad no tendría que presenciar jamás. Pero es un reflejo de la guerra.

*Uno se encariña hasta con Julina, la yegua de la familia de Olda.

3.5 de 5 estrellas.

Lo que pienso de: El Príncipe Maldito

El Príncipe Maldito es la primer novela de una trilogía escrita por Ramón Obón. Este primer libro narra dos historias en tiempos diferentes, que se entremezclan después. La primera historia ocurre en Europa Central, en el siglo XI, donde un guerrero llamado Vládislav (conocido también como el Lobo Cruel), se intenta aferrar a la religión "pagana" y está en contra de lo propuesto por la Iglesia católica y el Papa Silvestre II. Al mismo tiempo, está perdidamente enamorado de la hija de un noble, una mujer hermosa llamada Sophía de Ferenc, lo que acarreará un amor maldito. La segunda historia ocurre en el siglo XXI en las inmediaciones de la Ciudad de México, cuando un abogado es contratado para vislumbrar los detalles de la muerte misteriosa de una joven de ascendencia húngara.

Lo primero que se nota de estos libros es lo bonitos y diferentes que son, no sólo el color de las páginas (el borde en todo caso) es negro, si no que cada capítulo empieza con una letra capitular, a la usanza de textos antiguos. Se puede vislumbrar que el diseñador de estos libros le puso mucho empeño. Sin embargo, ojalá el contenido fuera tan de alta calidad como el exterior.

*Opinión personal (SPOILERS):

Este libro no me gustó demasiado, es la segunda vez que lo leo, y creo que me gustó mucho menos esta segunda vez. Para empezar, la forma de escribir del autor me desespera en gran medida. Además, no sé si no tuvo edición el libro pero encontré diversas faltas de ortografía. Por otra parte, al menos en este tomo, siento que el autor no hizo su investigación adecuadamente. Es decir, ningún guerrero sanguinario del siglo XI hablaría de "doctrinas" y una dama noble de la misma época jamás se atrevería a desobedecer a su padre, pues era la mayor autoridad y prácticamente su propietario.

En general, los diálogos dejan muuuuuchísimo que desear. Me parece que esto junto con las descripciones son terribles. Nadie del siglo XXI habla como él dice que sus personajes hablan, y ciertamente nadie del siglo XI hablaba así, es algo que se volvió exasperante a la hora de leer.

Otro problema que encontré con este libro es que no simpaticé realmente con ningún personaje, e incluso había ocasiones en que quería que los "malos" ganaran.

Algo de la trama que simplemente no concibo es que Sophía se tardó 10 siglos en adivinar dónde estaba su amado. Me parece excesivo el tiempo, y sólo me hace pensar que su inteligencia ciertamente no era la mejor. Pero es más que eso, es completamente improbable que siendo inmortal no haya podido recorrer cada centímetro de la Tierra en 10 siglos, le daba perfectamente tiempo, aún cuando no supiera dónde buscar.

En muchas partes de la trama, ésta parece forzada y no fluye con naturalidad.

Algo que me molestó sobremanera es que las mujeres son terriblemente objetificadas en esta historia, siempre habla de que "desprendían sensualidad" y que las "hembras" y que "su bien torneado cuerpo", sin importar a qué personaje femenino se refiriera. Es un aspecto de la novela que es molesto y hartante.

En general la historia queda a deber. Le di 3 de 5 estrellas.

My thoughts on: Eleanor and Park

Eleanor and Park by Rainbow Rowell is a magnificent piece of young adult literature. It follows two amazing characters (Eleanor and Park, duuh) while they are in high school. It all begins in the school bus, a place where they met, and gives birth to an unexpected relationship.

They both come from very different places, and they both have past so different. Park has almost a perfect family, with their loving parents and their pretty home. On the other hand, Eleanor has suffered from a series of unfortunate and cruel situations that make her who she is. However, they both have common things, and a misfit story is told. 

Personal opinion (SPOILERS): 

*At first, when I read the Prologue, I thought she was dead. Thank god I was wrong. 

*What I think gives so much to the story is the fact that is narrated through Park's POV and Eleanor's POV simultaneously. 

*She might have a broken home and a bunch of dark experiences, but she is quite relatable. 

*I had a lot of "aww" times reading this book, there were parts that melted my heart (although there are also parts that make me feel so frustrated and mad at some of this characters). 

*I reeeeeallllyy liked Park, I think he was so sweet and thoughtful (I fell in love with him). And also I liked how sarcastic and funny Eleanor is. 

*The topics this book talks about are so serious and so true, from bullying, gender prejudices, home abuse, etc. Both had to deal with some heavy stuff in their young lives. 

*I loved the writing style of Rainbow Rowell. I am totally picking up some of her other books (I hope soon). 

*I did not see coming that Richie was the one writing perv things in Eleanor books, I was shocked and mad, and felt such a repulsion for him, I wanted to kill him. 

*Turns out Steve and Tina were not as bad as they thought. Even bad kids could be good in serious life mess. 

*Finally, I am totally going with the Goodreads theory that those 3 words were not "I love you", but "I'm coming back" with the postcard thing and stuff. I hope so. Also, I have seen a couple of tweets and posts in tumblr where Rainbow says she is not done with E&P, and she might right them some time in the future. If she does, I am totally buying that. 

Totally a 5 out of 5 rating for me. 

Lo que pienso de: El niño con el pijama de rayas

El niño con el pijama de rayas, de John Boyne narra la historia de Bruno, un niño alemán, que se ve obligado a dejar lo que conoce y mudarse a una casa que no le agrada mucho, todo por el trabajo de su papá. La historia transcurre en los años de la Segunda Guerra Mundial, y a pesar de no estar contada en primera persona, la trama se desarrolla desde la perspectiva de él. Por eso mismo, hay un dejo de inocencia y ternura en la manera en que se narran los hechos de esta historia.

Este libro no podría ser entendido (a mi parecer) por personas que no estén al menos ligeramente familiarizadas con el tema de la Alemania nazi.

Opinión personal (contiene SPOILERS):

*Como en la 3ra página me percaté de que el "Furias" era el Führer. Me parece que fue muy inteligente y creativo, pues sin duda un niño le llamaría así o modificaría el nombre de esa manera.

*La inocencia de los niños es asombrosa y me parece que le agrega un importante toque de realismo a la novela.

*Me gusta el contraste entre la inocencia del niño y la perversidad de una mente contaminada, como lo es la de los adultos.

*Bruno es un niño noble, educado y de corazón puro. Me gusta que sea sincero consigo mismo, pues es su mayor valor.

*María (la criada) le advierte que no puede decir lo que piensa al niño, quien realmente no entiende el por qué de la censura.

*El hecho de que la historia sea narrada por un niño lo hace más doloroso, y se entiende antes las cosas que él aún no comprende.

*El final de este libro se puede adivinar, pero no por ello el dolor es más soportable.


Sin duda, 5 de 5 estrellas

Lo que pienso de: Un grito de amor desde el centro del mundo

Me sorprendió lo "actual" de la narración, mencionaba computadoras y la preservación medioambiental (me sorprendió, porque la contraportada dice que es la novela japonesa más leída, y ello me llamó la atención ya que pensaría que un clásico sería el más leído).

La forma de escribir se me hace un poco más occidentalizada. No noté tanto su forma particular de escribir. Sin embargo, me gustó tantas referencias a la literatura japonesa.

Me recordó un poco a TFIOS, no por la trama, si no, algunas pequeñas referencias y detalles.

Lo que pienso de: El libro vacío/ Los años falsos

El libro vacío de Josefina Vincens es sobre un cuaderno no escrito y otro a punto de escribirse. En este caso simplemente pondré cosas que pensaba durante la lectura de este libro, porque no es como una historia con trama. 

*Cuando lo comencé a leer me preguntaba si ¿vacío porque la vida será así? vacía. Porque habla de la vida de un tipo que pareciera que escribe para llenar su vacío interno. 

*El protagonista se me hacía tremendamente egoísta, y no me cayó particularmente bien. 

*El final fue espectacular y eso fue lo que le subió una estrella entera. Me gustó la idea de que uno nunca termina de empezar a escribir. 

Le di 3 estrellas de 5 en Goodreads.

Los años falsos, es una historia que disfruté más que el libro vacío. Esta pequeña novela abarca el problema de la identidad y de la imposibilidad de encontrarse, a no ser que se refleje uno mismo en otra persona, pero entonces, ¿se es? 

De nuevo el final fue genial, si el niño no pudo vivir como él, quizá pueda morir como él. 

Le di 4 estrellas de 5 en Goodreads. 

Lo que pienso de: Las ventajas de ser invisible

Las ventajas de ser invisible, de Stephen Chbosky es una novela contada en forma de diario, en donde el personaje principal, Charlie cuenta cómo es su primer año en la preparatoria, sus problemas personales, la relación con su familia y con sus nuevos amigos, etc.

Opinión personal, *posibles SPOILERS*:

*Al principio, pensé que al amigo al que le escribía era a Dios, y realmente nunca se llega a saber a quién dirige todo lo que escribe. Realmente no encontré en Charlie un personaje que me gustara, es muy ingenuo, aunque entiendo que se debe en gran parte a la falta de relaciones con amigos, a su pasado, etc.

*Habla sobre temas sociales como las relaciones amistades, la muerte, violencia intrafamiliar, abuso sexual, etc.

*Es raro, había ocasiones en que no me gustaba cómo escribía, pero otras veces sí. En general, sin embargo no disfruté su estilo de escritura.

*Algo que me gustó (y que creo fue un elemento decisivo a la hora de ponerle un rating al libro) fue que era "fast paced", es decir, rápido de leer.

*Otra cosa que me gustó es que la redacción y estilo de escritura mejora conforme Charlie meora en la entrega de sus ensayos.

*Al final sentí que no concluyó

*Por otra parte, creo que Patrick fue el único personaje que se mantuvo fiel a sí mismo y él único personaje que realmente me simpático y con el que congenié.

Thoughts on: Divergent

Divergent by Veronica Roth is a dystopian YA book, which centers in Beatrice, a teen girl that lives in a society divided in factions (5: Abnegation, Candor, Erudite, Amity and Dauntless). Each faction enhaces a particular virtue, for instance honesty, selfesness or bravery. Each year, the young people have to take a test and found out where their are better suited for, and then in a public ceremony, they are forced to choose the faction in which they will belong the rest of their lives.

Personal Opinion, Questions and  *POSSIBLE SPOILERS*:

*I feel like the political situation is not very well explained, even though it represents a very important and fundamental part of the story.
*I want to continue the series mainly because I wanna know more about how the society turned out to be like that, and what are they (and the city) guarding from?
*I appreciate the aspect of the mind control and the beginning of the factions being corrupted in their ideals
*However, something that really bothered me is that Caleb and Tris were so "ok" with their parents death, or that she interposed between Tobias and his dad, it was not her fight, and I think it was not justified for her to do that.

I believe I gave Divergent 3 out of 5 stars in Goodreds. Not my favorite thing but I think I'll read Insurgent despite of it.

Lo que pienso de: La brújula dorada

Este libro es el primero en la trilogía de Philip Pullman, His Dark Materials (La Materia Oscura). "La Brújula Dorada" narra la historia de Lyra, una niña huérfana que estudia en el Jordan College, en Oxford, en un mundo en el que todas las personas nacen con un daimonion, que es un animal que los acompaña toda la vida y que representa algo parecido al alma del ser humano. El vínculo entre el daimonion y su persona es tan fuerte que podría decirse que son un mismo ente.

La historia comienza cuando Lyra -por estar de traviesa y fisgona- se encuentra en la oficina del director del colegio cuando entra una serie de personas importantes que vienen a tratar el tema de un fenómeno natural que ocurre en el Norte, y Lord Asriel (tío de Lyra) se encuentra en una expedición para tratar un tema relacionado con el "Polvo". A partir de ahí, Lyra se encuentra envuelta en una aventura en la que ella y Pantalaimon (Pan de cariño), deben enfrentarse a una serie de peligros, en busca de su amigo y de respuestas. El mundo está lleno de misterios como el Polvo, pero también de peligros, de niños desaparecidos, de giptanos, de osos acorazados, brujas etc.

Opinión propia y spoilers:

*La crítica que se hace en torno a la Iglesia (con un poder absoluto), resulta interesante de leer y fácil de relacionar con el mundo real. Es decir, no es algo que Pullman haya escondido o que haya puesto en un nivel implícito, si no que intenta de alguna forma no disfrazar tanto la situación en ese aspecto (La Junta de Oblación, la posibilidad de existencia de otros mundos, etc).

*No me gustó que la situación de los daimonions no se explicara sino hasta bien entrado el libro. Si es el primer libro en una serie/trilogía, debería explicar lo mejor posible el mundo en el que se está contando la historia. Sin embargo, en este caso, hay un poco de carencia en ese aspecto.

*Se percibe el atisbo de una desigualdad social, a Lyra la buscan y a todos los niños desaparecidos no; lo que causa enojo entre el pueblo.

*También me pareció importante que uno de los temas que yo percibí es el entendimiento entre los pueblos diferentes, y sus costumbres.

Bout of books 10.0

I have decided to participate in this readathon! Since it is my first week of summer vacation, this is a great way to start them! I have still work, but school is done :) so I will be having lots of extra time to read. This is the second time I participate in one of bout of books readathons, they are tons of fun.

The Bout of Books 10.0 will start on May 12th -so in a couple of hours for me now- and is going to end on May 18th at midnight. Here is a much more broad explanation of what it involves:

The Bout of Books read-a-thon is organized by Amanda @ On a Book Bender and Kelly @ Reading the Paranormal. It is a week long read-a-thon that begins 12:01am Monday, May 12th and runs through Sunday, May 18th in whatever time zone you are in. *Saeculum by Ursula Poznanski

I realize it is an ambitious goal, but I will push to get through it.

My thoughts on: Looking for Alaska

So, Looking for Alaska was my first John Green book. This is what I thought of it: 

• This book reminded me a lot of Catcher in the Rye, especially at the beginning. I really don't know why or what elements of the novel reminded me of that but I remember it did, way before I knew Green's favourite classic is indeed J.D.Salinger's most famous book. I guess, the influence is quite evident. 
• I found Alaska annoying. She kepts complementing Miles for anything and then saying "too bad I love my boyfriend" and stuff like that. I mean, I question -quite frequently- whether she really loved her boyfriend. I did not appreciate that she played with Pudge's feelings. I know that is supposed to be her character and the way she is, all cool and stuff, but I do not know, I really did not like her much. 
• By this time, I had already seen -several times- The Perks of Being a Wallflowe -but I hadn't had read the book- and I remember that I thought the movie also had some similarities -in tone- with Looking for Alaska. Nevertheless, now I have already read The Perks, and cannot found anything remotely similar now. But, I guess it was the feeling of the movie, I do not know. 
• 50 pages in, I was really enjoying this book. 

*SPOILER PART*

• Before I read this book, I haven't had being spoiled at all. So, I was trying to figure out all the lose items in the novel. For example, I was hardly suspecting that Alaska was the one that ratted Maryn and Paul. Turns out it was true. 
• In the first chapters I have not decide if I liked Alaska or not. Because I liked a few features of her, but I abhorred another ones. For example, I liked that se seemed liberal, and feminist, and completely loved the portrayal of her room with all those books. But was not quite sure about her sex freedom positions -not pun intended-. I'll explain this. I think she was trying so hard to go against the patriarchy of society that she was actually contradicting her own principles. For example when she says that men should not treat women as objects, but then says she enjoys watching porn -which in general, portrays women as objects-. I realize, she then says that "as long as the woman enjoys it too", but how often those that happen in porn? Also, many times porn movies are made with trafficked women.
• Since I was not spoiled, I first thought "before" meant before they made out, then I thought before the prank. 
• But when I arrived to that part, I really felt the sadness and my mouth was bitter. I really got invested with Miles, especially, and his pain was almost tangible. 
• Something I would like to highlight is the way I found surprising how well Green changes the mood. From "poor Alaska" to "that bitch". But I guess that is how it is when something that hard happens to everyone. You are sorry and sad and then your think how selfish of them to leave you like this. I think that was really accurate human behaviour. 
• I remember I thought -before I knew really, of course- that was Alaska lost their way in life? 
• I do not if this was intended but I think that if it is, then it is really symbolic how Chip was pennamed "Colonel" and Alaska's fav book was "The General in the Labyrinth". Colonel in Labyrinth. 
• I found really good that the book starts 136 days before and ends 136 after. Changing everything, but closing cycles, as well. 

I gave this book 4 out of 5 stars. Even when it was not what I was expecting, I still like it very much. I recommend this book. 

My thoughts on: Jane Eyre

Jane Eyre was my first read of 2014, because of the nature of the book, the few next arguments may seem all over the place and without a clear order, but just because I found particularly difficult to make up my mind about this book. Anyway, this is what I thought of it:

*I remember the first thing I noticed of the book was the writing style. In the first chapters or so, for me it was like a poetic reading in verse, which I really liked, and thought it was great.

*I admire Jane's bravery as a girl, I thought that it required a lot of bravery to be able to stand up to the people who were mistreated her, even though they were the only thing sure for her.

*One thing I noticed is that at first it really gave me a hard time, cause I fall kind in a reading slump while reading this. I was not making any progress and was reading so sloely this book, I think it took me almost two months. And it was not until chapter 25 or so, that I began to actually enjoy the book.

*I did not fall in love with Mr. Rochester, I felt -at first- he was so weird about his feelings, like he did really liked Miss Ingram, and I couldn't help feel like he was just messing around. I foundh him a little bit too confusing.

*Sometimes the reading was fast-paced, and then some others were really descriptive and even boring.

*Something I really liked was the way Jane planted herself and her terms and values. Her dignity above the situations, although it was interfering with her really deep feelings for Mr. Rochester. I also liked that she was not happy of changing her nature, her name or her looks.

*I thought Mrs. Fairfax represent the close-minded time of the 19th Century (in the sense that she was nt completely agreeing with Jane being with Mr. Rochester).

*I also liked that Jane wanted to earn her own money and be independent and worthy of the things she has, to be able to buy her own stuff. But I also appreciate that she prefered relations over money.

* Jane is certainly not as any other woman, she defiaced customs and the way the women were at that time.

*The book has surprised me a couple of times, in the sense that I did not expected to happen, which was great.

*Overall I gave this book 3.5 out of 5 stars in Goodreads.

Even though I read a lot of authors from different parts of the world, it is quite obvious that my major influence the past year in terms of literature was from US authors, which I am not quite pleased with, I need more diversity. Also, without counting Australia I read 12 books of "Western authors" and 11 of authors from anywhere else. And to be honest, I am not doing any better this year, from the 5 books I had read so far, they all are US or British authors, so I have a little bit more than 9 months to change that, let's see if I make it.

In terms of gender, I am quite worried about, because I am not being equal enough, since 19 of the books I read were written by men and 4 by women. That is just terribly sad, and something I really need to start working on.

Finally, I read 18 books in Spanish and 6 books in English, this year though, I think I might be reading more in English.

I hope I can improve my reading statistics for this year, we'll find out next January.

Libros adquiridos: Febrero 2014

Este  mes obtuve 4 libros:

En El Sótano había promoción de 3x2 en libros de la editorial Punto de Lectura, así que compré 3:

*62/Modelo para armar de Julio Cortázar. 

*Nocturna, de Guillermo del Toro y Chuck Nogan. (Originalmente iba a comprar los 3 de la serie, pero pensé que si no me gustaba sería un desperdicio, así que probaré primero con Nocturna). 

 *Cuentos Orientales, de Marguerite Yourcenar. He escuchado muchas cosas grandiosas de esta autora y nunca la he leído, así que pensé que era una buena oportunidad para leerla.

 Además, compré este hermoso libro en Gandhi:

*Sense and Sensibility by Jane Austen. Este libro es el primero que Austen publicó, por lo que estoy ansiosa de conocer su primera obra.

A principios de este mes visité una Gandhi en el centro de Coyoacán y me encontré con una grata sorpresa:

Además, más tarde en el mes recibí un hermoso paquete de The Book Depository, con un libro que había ganado en un giveaway en noviembre, del canal de Elli, The Bibliophile (vean su canal aquí: http://www.youtube.com/user/bibliophilereads/videos).

*Politics and the English Language fue lo que me gané :)

Lo que pienso de: "La raya" de Kim Yoo-Young

Hace unas semanas leí este libro surcoreano, estoy intentando expander mis horizontes en cuanto a literatura, por lo que pretendo leer algo de diferentes países y regiones. Éste fue mi primer acercamiento a la literatura surcoreana y a continuación les diré qué me pareció este libro.

"La raya" narra la historia de una familia surcoreana en tiempos de después de la guerra (yo me imagino que es la guerra entre el sur y el norte, pero en realidad nunca se especifica claramente). Sin embargo, la guerra no juega un papel importante en este relato, pues se le menciona únicamente en dos ocasiones e incluso entonces es un comentario aleatorio, no realmente algo significativo.

La historia es contada a través de Seyong, un chico de 12 ó 13 años que vive únicamente con su madre. Viven en un pueblo humilde donde está constantemente nevando (o al menos las partes importantes de la vida de Seyong se ven envueltas entre la época de nieve). El padre de Seyong los abandonó hace años y la madre pone rayas (el animal) en la cocina, que según Seyong, representan a su padre; asimismo, él las usa como cometas. Debido a esto, Seyong relaciona las cometas con su padre perdido, y a éste con las rayas.

Al principio de la historia, una chica (que después es bautizada como Samne) entra a la casa de Seyong para refugiarse de la nieve. La madre y Samne desarrollan a lo largo de la historia una relación un poco extraña, es como de madre e hija, pero Samne parece nunca interesarse por la madre y ve por ella misma; mientras que la madre no puede tenerla como hija porque podría traer deshonor a la familia, y lo que piensen los vecinos y la sociedad es de suma importancia.

Lo que me llamó la atención del libro (POSIBLES SPOILERS):

*Primero me gustaría resaltar que al principio del libro me gustaba el estilo de escritura, sin embargo en ocasiones lo encontraba muy barroco. Claro que eso se puede deber a que no lo leí en el idioma original.
* La madre es un personaje muy orgulloso, no expresa claramente sus sentimientos (quizá debido a la importancia del honor en la cultura coreana), incluso se llega a pensar que para ella quienes expresan sus sentimientos son personas sumamente imprudentes. Esta característica hizo que fuera un poco difícil descifrarla y entenderla, de alguna manera, siempre fue un misterio.
*De alguna forma, la historia me recuerda a Penélope y a Ulises, en el sentido de que ella podría estar esperando al esposo eternamente; pero no saldría a buscarlo.
*En una parte de la historia en que Samne se escapa, el esposo de ésta va a la casa de Seyong para buscarla, y la mamá lo trata muy bien. En el momento, yo tenía la percepción de que la madre lo trata bien porque él la busca y siente que eso debió hacer su esposo con ella: buscarla. Más tarde esta percepción resulta verdad.
*Como ya se mencionó, el orgullo resulta ser un leitmotiv en la historia.

La historia al final dio un par de vuelcos que no veía venir y que fueron sorpresivos. Como con casi toda la literatura asiática del siglo XX (al menos la que he leído), hay una parte que siento que no se puede vislumbrar correctamente si no se pertenece a dicha cultura, siempre hay un velo que permanece intacto e invisible para otros lectores. En este caso, para mí, fue el final.

Bout of Books 9.0 Create a Story Challenge

This is my entry for this challenge of creating a story. However, I was reading my only spanish book in my TBR for this readathon, so the story would be in Spanish (cause obviously the words were) but I would be translating it into English (as well as I can). So, without further due, here it is:

So... this popular readathon begun today! And I thought I would join!! It is going to be a fun week!
